Catalina Island

Lying in the waters of the Pacific, just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, is the idyllic gem of Santa Catalina Island, more commonly known as Catalina. If you’re seeking adventure, looking to learn about California history, or simply want to relax and unwind, this picturesque island has something for everyone. From its pristine beaches to rugged hiking trails, here’s your guide to the top things to do on Catalina Island.

Avalon: The Heart of Catalina

Avalon is the island’s vibrant hub and one of the two main harbors that service Catalina Island. As you disembark from your ferry, the quaint charm of this small town immediately welcomes you into its embrace. There are plenty of pedestrian-friendly shops, every manner of restaurants, and ice cream parlors.

You can’t miss a visit to the Catalina Museum for Art & History, situated right in the heart of Avalon.  This cultural hub celebrates the rich and unique history of the island through art, artifacts, photographs, film, and much more.

There is no more iconic place to eat in Avalon than at Luau Larry’s. Serving the most delicious food and drinks on the island at reasonable prices for over 30 years, this island staple is conveniently located on the main drag and offers stunning views of the harbor.

Two Harbors:  The Isthmus

Known as the Isthmus by the 298 people who call this small town home, Two Harbors is a small village to the north of the island that is the second largest population center besides Avalon. If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle then you’ve come to the right place here.  The Isthmus has just 1 hotel, 1 general store, and 2 restaurants.

Adventure Awaits: Outdoor Activities

If you’re not the type to lounge your day away and would prefer to Carpe the Diem, then fret not because this island is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Check out some of these outdoorsy activities.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

The clear Pacific waters and Marine Protected Areas around the island are home to a diverse array of marine life. Known around the world for its clear water SCUBA diving, you can explore underwater wonders like shipwrecks and planes, reefs, kelp forests, and an abundance of exotic marine life. Popular places to dive are Lover’s Cove Marine Preserve as well as Casino Point Dive Park, located just past the historic Catalina Casino Building, to the north of downtown Avalon. If you’re not SCUBA certified, don’t worry because the waters around the island are so clear and calm, that you can see plenty with just a mask, snorkel, and some flippers.

Zip Line Eco Tour

If you’re looking for a unique Catalina experience, the Catalina Island Zip Line Eco Tour is an absolute must. Soar high above the island’s canyons and rugged terrain while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. But it’s not all adrenaline here, because as part of the guided tour, you can also learn about the island’s unique flora and fauna, as well as their conservation efforts.

This is the island’s most sold-out tour, so make sure to book reservations early. Children must be at least 10 years old and unfortunately, there is a minimum weight requirement of 80 lbs and a maximum of 240 lbs (there are no refunds if you’re over the weight limit upon arrival).

Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Explore Catalina’s stunning coastline at your own pace with a kayak or paddleboard rental.  Paddling through the calm harbor waters you might catch a glimpse of some sea lions chilling on some rocks or dolphins playing in the waves.

Serenity Now:  Leisure & Relaxation

After an action-packed day trekking over the island, you’re probably looking to unwind. What better way than to relax and soak up the tranquil island atmosphere with some of these activities.

Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Garden has as its centerpiece the Wrigley Memorial. Dedicated to William Wrigley Jr- yes, The William Wrigley who was a chewing gum magnate that developed much of the island, this wonderfully peaceful spot within the gardens is a beautiful place to relax and take in the native flora. This 38-acre facility is just a brief walk from downtown Avalon and the cost of admission is always free. Which is our favorite cost!

Descanso Beach Club

Who says that you have to do anything at all? The Descanso Beach Club is the ultimate spot for relaxation on the island. This private beach club is actually one of the last private beaches open to the public. As it says on their website, “put a drink in your hand and your feet in the sand” while you lounge in any of their cabanas, enjoying the gorgeous ocean views.

Book a Cruise

Since you probably took a boat here, you should consider keeping the aquatic theme and book any of the fantastic boat tours or charters around the island. Choose your own adventure with options like a traditional boat cruise around the island or peer beneath the surface of the ocean with a glass bottom boat tour or on a real submarine expedition in a semi-submersible vessel!

Bottom Line

Catalina Island is a delightful destination that has something different for everyone. If you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a little bit of both, this island getaway will definitely not disappoint. And you don’t have to go by our guide; there are plenty of other things to do around the island like a Bison Expedition, going on a night-time flying fish voyage, a falconry experience, or touring The Catalina Casino.

The only way to access the island is by ferry or helicopter, so this is not an impulse visit and there are some logistics involved, but don’t let a little prudent planning dissuade you from getting there.  However you decide to get to Santa Catalina, make sure that Xpress Shuttles is part of that plan.

There are four ports departing the mainland to the island and our services can help you navigate all of them. If you prefer a much cooler 15-minute helicopter ride to the island, we can get you there as well with one of our airport and heliport shuttles. All that’s left now is for you to pack your bags and some sunscreen, and get ready to be enchanted by Catalina Island.
